Despite the amount of information available about proper diet and fitness, people are still becoming more and more obese. Could the 9 to 5 lifestyle be influencing this trend?

Staying Active

It’s important that you dedicate some time – at least four hours every week – as exercise time. You don’t have to go to the gym, just so long as you commit to some kind of activity that will get your heart rate up and your muscles moving.

Research has shown that physical activity, along with burning extra calories and helping you stay in shape, releases chemicals within the brain that help alleviate stress, promote good moods, and generally just help you stay happier. Have you ever heard someone return from an extensive workout and say that they “feel great”? That feeling is the result of the body’s reaction to the physical stress and the resulting chemicals released by the brain.

How Does Physical Activity Relate To Your Professional Life?

If you are a happy person at home you’re likely to transfer that attitude to work, and it has been proven time and time again that coming to work with a positive attitude manifests better results.

There are a lot of components which affect someone’s happiness, and they very from person to person. Some may find happiness in monetary possessions, such as cars expensive cars and electronics, while others may find happiness in artwork or poetry. These are just examples of elements which help manifest a positive mood within someone, and they are certainly not limiting.

One element which continually affects someones self confidence (and mood as a result) is their self appearance. Having a positive perception of ones self is a great way to become and stay happier. Existing with negative overlying thoughts, such as the belief that you are “fat”, will affect nearly all aspects of someone’s life. This affects you not only at home, but at work as well.

Let’s Face the Facts Here

You never see negative, unhappy people succeed and advance within their places of employment. The negative energy that they give off is unappealing from the perspective of an employer. Employees that are motivated and positive are the most likely to be considered for advancement.

Staying physically active does a number of things for you. Aside from increasing your physical health and appearance, it makes a noticeable contribution to to your overall sense of satisfaction and mood- people pick up on positive energy and react in a more positive way.

Staying physically active definitely helps improve one’s mood, gives them energy, and also confidence.
And we definitely have an obesity and overweight problem that needs to be addressed. I think that the work week does hold people back from exercise. Many companies are setting aside time during the week for their employees to get exercise. Others are even offering benefits/bonuses to those that lose weight.

  • Very true post. When I used to go jogging before starting my daytrading routine I would feel much more relaxed and less tired. The last couple of weeks I have stopped doing any exercise and the results have showed.

  • Thanks for the compliment Doug!
The approach that companies are taking are definitely a step in the right direction. Unfortunately, many people do not have the desire nor the motivation to become physically active.

  • Have you watched Heroes? There you can see that Japanese workers do some morning exercise to which even the boss attends.
