Brand Yourself

Ever wonder how some people build a brand for themselves and others don’t? I think about this a lot and yesterday’s Investor’s Business Daily had a good article on “branding yourself” highlighting David Bach, author of “The Automatic Millionaire”, “Smart Women Finish Rich” and more. Bach and his publisher have done an excellent job of branding him and I’ll highlight some of the ways to do so:

  • Pick one or two things and focus on those. Don’t clutter the audience’s mind. You can’t be all things to all people.
  • Stand for something.
  • Make complicated issues simple and get people to take action.
  • Tap your passion. Identify what you love and pursue that area. Nothing else.
  • Become skilled at generating publicity. Contact local papers, cable channels, and the press.
  • Keep it simple. If you give any advice, make it simple.
  • Constantly evolve the brand. Slowly expand what you are doing to reach a broader audience.
  • Create multiple revenue streams. Once you found something people are interested in, start thinking bigger.
  • Know your target audience.

  • Hone,
I would agree. The multi-million dollar industry of hip hop has created throughout the years a very successful and unique style of branding. The modern hip hop fashion has branded itself in collaboration with popular and successful designers, who charge significant amounts for their products.

As a marketer this post attracted me … so thought I would mention one of my buddies who writes on this subject (branding). You can check his site at:

As you point out, there are many steps that you can take to brand yourself. But most people get stuck with understanding “how” to do these things. Mike writes excellent stories about branding success, and in many cases, explains exactly HOW you can turn your ideas into tactics for personal branding success.

  • Gavin,

  • I started out my business 2 years back at the age of 13. Understood the importance of self branding when a few days back a customer asked my assistant who I am and why did they hire such a young guy. Its a great article you have here, but it would be really very kind if you could help me find some more details. You can use my e-mail if you want. And once again, keep up your great blog!
    Regards,
